The Atari 2600 Video Computer System

Pitfall, the grandfather of platform games like Super Mario Bros.
Ah, the Atari 2600. The venerable video gaming system that the children of the 70s
and 80s grew up with. It may be obsolete, but it's certainly
not forgotten. It's still a favorite of classic gamers
everywhere, its classic games like Pitfall, Yar's Revenge,
Enduro, and Kaboom bringing avid gamers to bring back the old
classics to play them again and again.

Nowadays, it's hard to buy an Atari and games for it unless you search local thrift shops
and garage sales, to sift through people's pasts and find
these antiques of the gaming community. Fortunately,
Activision is bringing back collections of their games for
use on today's computers. Activision's Atari Action Packs
each give you 15 seperate blasts from the past that you can
play in a window and without bothering to hook up the old
Atari. Perhaps certain enthusiasts enjoy the nostalgia of
fiddling with the wires and cables, and enjoy the feeling of
the Atari joystick in their hands, but then there's people
who just like to play the games, and don't mind if they must
use a Gravis Gamepad or a keyboard. And now, other people
have been developing true Atari emulation programs, that are
compatible with a wider range of software.

Note: As with all emulation software, the emulators won't do anything unless you already
have the necessary ROMs of the games, and since the ROMs are
copyrighted and I don't have that much server space anyway,
you'll have to find them elsewhere.

Virtual VCS was the first DOS Atari emulator. The author, Dan Boris,
also wrote an emulator to emulate 8-bit Atari computers.
You can get them both at this site.

This Atari emulator is my personal favorite. It has sound support,
runs quickly, and has a nice menu system.
